Rising New York Road Runners Logo

Head to the scenic trails of Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx where kids can participate in a fun cross country event! This event is the first in a three-event series introducing youth athletes to the joy of cross country. The Rising NYRR at the NYRR Van Cortlandt Park Cross Country #2 is scheduled for Sunday, October 6, and the Rising NYRR at the NYRR Van Cortlandt Park Cross Country #3 will close out the series on Sunday, November 24.

Registration for this event is FREE and open to participants ages 2 to 18 of all abilities. Every finisher will receive a New Balance fanny pack. Please note that souvenirs are subject to availability. 

  • Stage 1: Register on this page only for participants ages 2 to 11 that are new to running and physical activity, for non-competitive short dashes.
  • Stage 2: Visit the Stage 2 page to register participants ages 8 to 18 for an untimed non-competitive 1-mile run. 
  • Stage 3: Visit the Stage 3 page to register participants ages 12 to 18 for a timed and competitive 1.5-mile race.

Why Run with Rising New York Road Runners?

Rising New York Road Runners events are designed to be fun, inclusive, and an opportunity for our youth to see what they are capable of. Registration for all Rising New York Road Runners events is completely free and made possible by the generosity of our community.

The chart below is a guide to the stages available. Use the chart to determine the appropriate stage for your child. If you need help determining your child's stage, contact our Runner Services team.

Race Number Pickup

 

Race numbers may be picked up at the NYRR RUNCENTER featuring the New Balance Run Hub at 320 West 57th Street (between Eighth and Ninth avenues) on the following dates: 

  • Monday, September 16, 9:00 a.m.–7:30 p.m. 
  • Tuesday, September 17, 9:00 a.m.–7:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, September 18, 9:00 a.m.-7:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, September 19, 9:00 a.m.–7:30 p.m.
  • Friday, September 20, 9:00 a.m.–7:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, September 21, 9:30 a.m. 5:00 p.m.  
  • Sunday, September 22, 9:30 a.m. 5:00 p.m. 
  • Monday, September 23, 9:00 a.m.–7:30 p.m. 
  • Tuesday, September 24, 9:00 a.m.–7:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, September 25, 9:00 a.m.–7:30 p.m.

Parents and guardians of runners are encouraged to pick up race numbers at the NYRR RUNCENTER to avoid race-day lines.

On race day, Stage 1 race number pickup will be available from 8:30 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. at Race-Day Central, located near the Tortoise and Hare statue in Van Cortlandt Park. If you plan to pick up a runner's race number on race day, please arrive at least 60 minutes before the start of their run.

Participants should report to the staging area (starts separated by age group) 10 minutes before the start of their run. Please note that dashes for age groups within Stage 1 will start on a rolling schedule; refer to the estimated start times listed below.

Race Day


Bag Check

 

Bag check will be available from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Race-Day Central, located near the Tortoise and Hare statue in Van Cortlandt Park.

Planning to check a bag on race morning? While we will continue to have clear plastic bags available at number pickup, we encourage you to use your own clear reusable plastic bag, no larger than 17" wide x 20" high x 7" deep, with the tag affixed.

NYRR is not responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen bags or items from bags checked at NYRR bag check.

Start Location / Map

Participants will run short dashes of various distances. See the Schedule of Events section for the estimated distances each age group in Stage 1 will run. Participants will line up along the flats (north of the finish line) and run toward the finish line (near the Tortoise and Hare statue).

Souvenirs

 

Finishers will receive a New Balance fanny pack. Please note that souvenirs are subject to availability.

Souvenirs will only be distributed on race day from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Race-Day Central, located near the Tortoise and Hare statue in Van Cortlandt Park. A youth race number must be presented to collect the event souvenir.

Cancellation Policy

 

If NYRR cancels an offering on the direction of local, city, or state authorities, participants will be informed as soon as possible, including communication of participant resolution options. Events will not be rescheduled.
