Virtual Harlem 5K Honoring Percy Sutton 100 and Charles Rangel 90

The 2020 Virtual Harlem 5K Honoring Percy Sutton 100 and Charles Rangel 90 celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Percy Sutton (1920-2009). As Manhattan Borough President in the 1970s, Sutton championed moving the New York City Marathon out of the confines of Central Park and onto the streets of the five boroughs of New York City. Sutton remained a supporter of NYRR and running throughout his long life.

The 2020 run also honors the 90th birthday of former Congressman Hon. Charles B. Rangel, a veteran of the Korean War who was awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Rangel represented Harlem for 46 years in the U.S. House of Representatives and helped to bring about the economic and residential revitalization of the greater Harlem area and other urban areas nationwide.

The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce is working tirelessly through the COVID-19 pandemic, in concert with The City College of New York, Columbia University, the NAACP, NYC & Company, and other renowned regional organizations, institutions, and individuals, to provide greatly needed support to residents, businesses and community-based organizations of Upper Manhattan.

The mission of SUPPORT HARLEM NOW is to assist the greater Harlem community by providing services for its senior citizens, families in need, the homeless, local small businesses, arts and cultural organizations, community service organizations, and not-for-profits, and to assist schoolchildren.

Rising New York Road Runners Virtual Event

In addition to the virtual 5K, a new activity celebrating Percy Sutton’s legacy and the historic neighborhood of Harlem has been added to the free Rising New York Road Runners Moves for Black Lives Matter virtual youth event. The fun physical activity leads kids on a virtual tour of the neighborhood, with stops at iconic Harlem locations that pay tribute to Sutton, Rangel, and other notable Black trailblazers.
