The NYRR Hall of Fame was inaugurated on November 4, 2011, during our first-ever Marathon Opening Ceremony celebration in Central Park.

The inaugural inductees were the late Fred Lebow, who co-founded the New York City Marathon and served as its race director and as the president of NYRR for more than two decades, and the legendary Grete Waitz of Norway, who won the New York City Marathon nine times and served as the chairwoman on NYRR Youth and Community Services until her death in April 2011. The induction of Lebow and Waitz is the first step in honoring all the legendary figures of our sport, who through their triumphs and contributions have made NYRR and the TCS New York City Marathon what they are today.
