NYRR Prize Money Policies

Last Updated: September 3, 2024

Rules Applicable to All Prize Money

  • Unless otherwise indicated on the NYRR Prize Money page, all prize money in the Open Division, Wheelchair Division, and NYRR Member Division will be determined by order of finish, based on “Gun Time,” defined as the moment the race officially starts until the participant crosses the Finish Line at the conclusion of their run.
  • Any change in a participant’s gender profile must have occurred at least three months prior to the date of the race.
  • The participant’s gender profile at the time of race registration must match their selected gender profile on race day.
  • After initially registering for the race, a participant must not have made a change to their gender identity on their race registration, and must not have changed their NYRR gender profile prior to race day.
  • All participants must comply with all NYRR race policies, including but not limited to the Code of Conduct and the Rules of Competition.
  • All athletes must comply with NYRR's Run Clean Policy.
  • Each race in which prize money is offered may have additional rules for prize money, and the official rules for prize money for a race shall be published on the NYRR Prize Money page prior to race day.
  • Unless otherwise noted, if a runner qualifies for prize money in multiple categories, only the highest amount will be paid.
  • NYRR periodically reviews the decision to offer prize money for certain races, the amount of prize money, and the rules for prize money. All prize money requirements are subject to change.

Rules Applicable to NYRR Member Division Prize Money

To be eligible for NYRR Member Division prize money, including team prize money (where offered):

  • Participants must follow the Rules Applicable to All Prize Money.
  • Participants must have a valid paid NYRR membership on race day and for at least three months prior to race day. For the TCS New York City Marathon, this requirement is six months. NYRR Member Division prize money eligibility at the TCS New York City Marathon – including team prize money – is also dependent on the participant having completed a minimum of six fully-scored NYRR races during the established window (approximately one calendar year). NYRR virtual races do not count towards this requirement. For prize money in all other NYRR races, there is no minimum number of races that must be met.
    • “Paid” membership refers to all NYRR Membership categories except the free “Friend” category.
    • NYRR will allow for a membership lapse of up to 60 days provided the participant has renewed their membership before the date of the race.
