On September 22, thousands of runners will boogie down in the Bronx at the New Balance Bronx 10 Mile along with hundreds of youth runners at the free Boogie Down Kids Run at the New Balance Bronx 10 Mile.

The race is the fourth event in the 2024 NYRR Five-Borough Series

NYRR was founded as the Road Runners Club – New York Association in 1958 at Macombs Dam Park in the Bronx. Our first race was a 6-mile cross country event in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, and many other early races took place through the neighborhoods around Yankee Stadium. Learn more about our early history.

The New Balance Bronx 10 Mile finishes near the Joseph Yancey Track, named after the founder of the New York Pioneer Club, an interracial club that featured many elite runners, including NYRR's first president, Ted Corbitt.

The Bronx Today

The Bronx is a vibrant borough with a diverse population. The borough has historically faced significant health disparities, and for the 16th consecutive year was named the least healthy county in New York state in 2024 by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s County Health Rankings and Roadmaps. The report found that 23% of Bronx adults are in fair or poor health, 35% of Bronx adults are obese, and 35% of Bronx children live in poverty.

A 2022 New York City Community Health Survey found that only 65.5% of Bronx adults had exercised in the last 30 days, the lowest percentage of reported exercise across the five boroughs and in contrast to Manhattan, where 81.7% of adults reported exercising within the last 30 days.

  • About 30 older adults in the Bronx participate in NYRR Striders, a free walking and fitness program that offers physical activity for older adults.
  • Over 30 Bronx residents are NYRR Race Free recipients.
  • Many run clubs and crews are based in the Bronx. Visit our clubs page and filter for the Bronx in the Locations tab to find Bronx-based clubs; look for them running and cheering at the New Balance Bronx 10 Mile!
  • NYRR stages three cross country races and youth events at the Bronx’s Van Cortlandt Park. This year’s events are coming up on September 29, October 6, and November 24 with 5K races for adults and free shorter races for youth ages 2–18. Visit our race calendar for info and to register.
