Celebramos el Mes de la Historia de la Mujer y el 50.º Aniversario de Title IX

Woman after finishing 2021 NY Mini 10K

Women’s History Month celebrates the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society.

As we celebrate Women’s History Month this March, we’re highlighting the historical milestones achieved by women in NYRR and the broader running community.

This year our Women’s History Month celebration also kicks off NYRR’s recognition of the 50th anniversary of the passage of Title IX (June 23).

Throughout March and in the months ahead, we hope to:

  • Elevate community leaders and highlight women-led and women-centric community leaders and community groups
  • Feature significant women in NYRR history—from trailblazing pioneers like Nina Kuscsik and Jackie Dixon, to today's superstars like Paralympic champion Tatyana McFadden
  • Amplify milestone moments and events in women’s running history—from the first Mini in 1972 to stunning new records and achievements in 2022
  • Communicate the impact of Title IX at NYRR and in running overall during the past 50 years

Women make up the majority of registered U.S. road race participants at the non-marathon distance—61% according to the 2020 Running USA Running Trends Report. In the 2021 TCS New York City Marathon, 45% of the finishers were women.

We want to tell the stories of the obstacles that women runners have faced—and still face—and their achievements in spite of those obstacles.

We’ll focus in particular on women of color, because better representation in the running community is an area where we still need to see progress.

We hope all of these stories will inspire current and aspiring runners.

As we proceed through the month, we’ll update this page to share more stories of strong women and girls. Keep checking back!
