Los corredores enfrentan el frío en Ted Corbitt 15K, la última carrera por puntos del club

Runners warmed up the roads in Central Park as just less than 5,000 participated in today’s NYRR Ted Corbitt 15K. Despite temperatures plummeting to the 20s, the chilly conditions didn’t deter runners, especially those competing in what was the last club points race of the year.

The overall winners were Brendan Martin of New York Athletic Club in 46:26 and Roberta Groner, also of New York Athletic Club in 53:10. Finalists for NYRR Club Night will be announced later this month, with the awards ceremony set for late January.

The 15K race honors Ted Corbitt (1919-2007), known as the “the father of long-distance running,” who completed an incredible lifetime total of 223 marathons and ultramarathons.

Corbitt was also the co-founder and first president of New York Road Runners and the first African American to compete in the Olympic marathon.

Corbitt’s legacy was celebrated all week in the run-up to race day. It started with a week-long coat drive, which honored Corbitt’s commitment to community service. On Friday, December 7, historian Gary Corbitt—Ted’s son—led a panel discussion entitled “Celebrating the First Generation of New York Road Runners” at the NYRR RUNCENTER featuring the NB Run Hub.

The cold conditions weren’t a factor for runners—and volunteers—who were looking to complete their 9+1 credit for guaranteed entry to the 2019 TCS New York City Marathon.

Need to make plans for New Year’s Eve? There’s one more race on the NYRR race calendar. Ring in the New Year at the NYRR Midnight Run on December 31.
