Hermin Garic
Hermin Garic, who was injured at age 4 when he and his parents fled from the Bosnian war, has been a wheelchair racer since 2005 and in the last two years has started hitting his prime. Since the start of 2021, he has won the Boilermaker 15K, the Falmouth Road Race, and the Cooper River Bridge Run, in addition to recording a runner-up finish at the United Airlines NYC Half and his first top-10 finish at an Abbott World Marathon Majors race in Boston. Earlier this year, he also set a new personal best of 1:24:18 at the Grandma’s Marathon.
When Garic was 4, a grenade exploded above his mother’s head and a piece of it struck his back, leaving him unable to use his legs ever since. Garic and his parents came to the U.S. in 2000, and shortly thereafter he got involved with the Sitrin Stars Program, which is how he was introduced to wheelchair racing.
