Fatima Gardadi
Fatima Gardadi became the first Moroccan or Arab woman to win a World Championships medal in the marathon when she took bronze last year in Budapest, spoiling an Ethiopian sweep. Her celebration moved the crowd, as she lifted her arms before falling to the ground and weeping.
She has been competing in athletics at the national level since 2010, slowly moving up in distance, and in 2022 won her debut marathon in Marrakesh in 2:25:07, smashing the course record. She then won the Rabat Marathon last April in a course-record time of 2:25:03 to qualify for the World Championships.
Gardadi trains in Ifrane, a popular destination in the Atlas Mountains for athletes competing in endurance sports due to its high altitude.
