The New Balance 5th Avenue Mile runs into its 42nd year with another popular race near Museum Mile. Lace up, toe the start line, then run your best mile down a 20-block stretch of New York City’s Fifth Avenue that’s home to world-class museums and cultural institutions.

Race Number Pickup

 

Numbers (which include your timing tag) may be picked up at the NYRR RUNCENTER at 320 West 57th Street (between Eighth and Ninth avenues) on the following dates:

Runners are encouraged to pick up their bibs at the RUNCENTER to avoid race day lines.

All participants will receive a New Balance Shorts at number pickup. Your shorts size may not be available at the time of bib pick-up.

On race day, number pickup will be available from 5:50 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at Race-Day Central (located in front of the Metropolitan Museum of Art on 5th Ave and 81st Street).

Show your race confirmation email or the QR code from your NYRR account to pick up your race materials. Proxy bib pickup is available for this race, so a friend or family member can pick up your race materials. The person will need the QR code for your NYRR account, along with a form of photo identification that corresponds to your NYRR account.

 

Race Day


Bag Check

 

Bag check will be available beginning at 5:50 am close to the start and finish lines. You must pick up your bag at the location you dropped it off.

Start line location: On 5th Ave between 80th and 81st.

Finish line location: In the SW of Grand Army Plaza.

Planning to check a bag on race morning? While we will continue to have clear plastic bags available at number pickup, we encourage you to use your own clear reusable plastic bag, no larger than 17" wide x 20" high x 7" deep, with the tag affixed.

NYRR is not responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen bags or items from bags checked at NYRR bag check.

The race will take a straight line down 5th Avenue, starting near East 80th Street and finishing near East 60th Street.

First quarter-mile (to 75th Street): The race begins on a slight downhill.

Second quarter-mile (to 70th Street): This segment features a slight uphill.

Third quarter-mile (to 65th Street): There's another gentle downhill in this segment.

Fourth quarter-mile (to 60th Street): The final five blocks are on a flat surface.

Start Procedure for Fastest Age-Group Runners

 

To ensure a safe start in a controlled environment for each age group, the following heats will include a special start area for the fastest runners in that age-group, based on NYRR best pace. These runners will receive a special bib sticker at race number pickup.

Runners with the special bib sticker should report to the start entrance area prior to their heat. They will be escorted to the front of the start area.

Results and Awards

 

Live, unofficial results will be available in the NYRR Racing App and at liveresults.nyrr.org during the event.

After the conclusion of the event, official results will be posted on results.nyrr.org.

For the pro field, awards will be presented on-site to the top men and women finishers.

For the NYRR Road Mile Championships, awards will be presented on-site to the top men and women finishers.

Runners who place in the top-three of their age group will be able to claim an award in the days following the race by filling out our Age-Group Awards Claim Form.

Prize Money

 

Prize money is available in the Professional Athlete and NYRR Road Mile Championships heats, only. Entry into these heats are by invitation; no entrant will be automatically placed in these heats. The minimum standards for inclusion in the NYRR Road Mile Championships are 4:30 for men, 5:00 for women, and 5:00 for non-binary categories. For consideration, contact eliteathletes@nyrr.org no later than August 15, 2023.

Halfway Leader Bonus

$1000 will be awarded to the halfway leader in the Professional Athlete heats. To collect this bonus, the halfway leader must finish the race in under 4:00 (men) or 4:32 (women). If they do not, the bonus will be awarded to the next-fastest runner at halfway who does break the above standards.

 

NYRR Road Mile Championships Heats

To be eligible for prize money in the NYRR Road Mile Championships, an athlete must have been a member of NYRR since at least June 10, 2023, including the date of the race.

NYRR Road Mile Championship Criteria **AT CAPACITY**

 

The NYRR Road Mile Championship is at capacity.

  • For any gender category to have an NYRR Road Mile Championship heat, a minimum of 5 registrants with the qualifying standard are required prior to August 18, 2023.
  • Qualifying mile times by gender category (athlete must provide results of an event that indicate ability to run this pace on race day):
    • Man - 4:30
    • Woman - 5:00
    • Non-Binary - 5:00
  • Heat capacity - minimum of 5 registrants.

Cancellation

 

If NYRR cancels an offering on the direction of local, city, or state authorities, participants will be informed as soon as possible, including communication of participant resolution options. Events will not be rescheduled.
