Rising New York Road Runners 800 Meter Finals to feature top middle school runners from five boroughs as NYRR celebrates 20 years of free youth running programs

New York, February 6, 2019 – The 112th edition of the NYRR Millrose Games on Saturday, February 9, at the New Balance Track & Field Center at The Armory, will highlight the year-round partnership between The Armory Foundation, which oversees the premier indoor track and field center in America, and New York Road Runners, the world’s largest community running organization.

The NYRR Millrose Games will be broadcast live nationally on NBC for the third consecutive year starting at 4:30 p.m. ET as part of the USATF Championship Series.

It will be the sixth year that NYRR will serve as the title sponsor of the event, as NYRR celebrates 20 years of its free youth running programs. Since 1999, NYRR has offered free youth running and fitness programs and events. Designed to get kids moving and foster a lasting love for physical fitness at a young age, Rising New York Road Runners, the organization’s flagship youth program, provides access to the sport of running to children in underserved and high-need communities.

“The NYRR Millrose Games is the most prestigious indoor track and field event in the world and showcases New York Road Runners’ partnership with The Armory, which is built around running as a sport for people of all ages and abilities,” said Michael Capiraso, president and CEO of NYRR. “At this year’s NYRR Millrose Games we are looking forward to celebrating 20 years of our free youth running programs with our Rising New York Road Runners 800 Meter Finals being a part of this great event.”

NYRR has partnered with The Armory Foundation since 2007 and sponsors events year-round at The Armory in support of the 125,000 kids it serves annually. NYRR is involved in many events and programs The Armory offers throughout the year, including the NYRR Millrose Games, the NYRR Thursday Night at the Races, its season-long high school training program, and several youth events.

The Rising New York Road Runners 800 Meter Finals at the NYRR Millrose Games will feature the top middle school runners from New York City’s five boroughs just before some of the world’s fastest runners compete in the iconic NYRR Wanamaker Mile. The Rising New York Road Runners 800 Meters Finals will include 15 boys and 16 girls who qualified for the event by outracing more than 100 competitors at January’s NYRR Millrose Games Trials at The Armory.

Rising New York Road Runners is designed to instill kids with confidence to stay healthy for life and is backed by the latest athletic development research.  Nearly 250,000 students are served locally and nationally through free NYRR youth running programs, events, and resources. Approximately 125,000 of those students are in New York City’s five boroughs.

At the NYRR Millrose Games, NYRR is also supporting the NYRR 4x200 meters and the NYRR Fastest Kid in the World races, with both events featuring inspiring youth runners who participate in Rising New York Road Runners across New York City’s five boroughs and beyond.

The NYRR Millrose Games will culminate with the NYRR Wanamaker Mile, the meet’s signature event which has taken place every year on the men’s side since 1926 and on the women’s side since 1976. This year’s field will include seven Olympians and 13 world championship participants, with the women’s field featuring defending champion and U.S. Olympian Colleen Quigley. A stacked men’s field will be highlighted by Olympic medalists Clayton Murphy and Nick Willis, last year’s world’s fastest miler Edward Cheserek, and two-time world indoor champion Yomif Kejelcha.
