New York Road Runners Round-Up: October 2016 Events
NYRR will host events for runners of all ages and abilities in October, with a variety of festive and family-friendly races throughout the five boroughs. Memorial Sloan Kettering’s Fred’s Team Presents Grete’s Great Gallop (13.1M) – (open)
Memorial Sloan Kettering’s Fred’s Team Presents Grete’s Great Gallop is a tribute to the legendary marathoner, Grete Waitz, nine-time winner of the New York City Marathon and a close friend of New York City Marathon co-founder Fred Lebow. The two shared incredibly moving memories, including their New York City Marathon race together in 1992 as Fred was fighting brain cancer. There will also be free kids’ races for children ages 2-12. NYRR Harry Murphy Cross Country (5K) – (open)
The Harry Murphy Cross Country 5K is a perfect opportunity for runners looking to experience the green spaces and wooded trails of Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. This race is in memory of Harry Murphy, a founding member of NYRR in 1958, who as a runner, coach, and mentor, is remembered for his innovative workouts, and for helping many develop a love for running. Youth, ages 7 to 18, will also have the opportunity to try out a cross-country course of their own. The free, one-mile race is a part of the NYRR Youth Running Series. NYRR Youth Running Series at Silver Lake State Park (1M) – (open)
The NYRR Youth Running Series at Clove Lakes Park, the third event in the 2016 fall NYRR Youth Running Series and free to all participants, will take place on Silver Lake Park’s cross country course. The race is one mile and will be for 7-18 year olds only. Every child will receive a souvenir T-shirt and bib and the top three individuals in each race will be given awards on site. NYRR Five-Borough Series: NYRR Staten Island Half – (near capacity)
The Staten Island Half will once again conclude the NYRR Five-Borough Series. This race is dedicated to making a positive impact on the borough that has hosted the start of the New York City Marathon for the past 40 years. Scheduled just four weeks before the TCS New York City Marathon, it is the perfect tune-up for the marathon. The race will feature fabulous views of New York and the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. TCS New York City Marathon – Race Week Events
NYRR Youth Jamboree Presented by Tata Consultancy Services (Fall) – (open)
Over 1,500 students from New York City public schools throughout the five boroughs are expected to participate in NYRR’s largest youth running event of the school year to kick off the 2016 TCS New York City Marathon Week. More information is available here.

NYRR Open Runs
This community-based initiative brings free weekly runs and walks to local neighborhood parks across New York City. Below are the weekly NYRR Open Runs for October. For NYRR Open Run media inquiries, please email media@nyrr.org. More information is available here.
New this month, Open Run Family Days, with kid friendly warm-ups and games, will take place at all Open Run meetings between October 11 and 17. Special Family Day events will begin 30 minutes prior to the Open Run start times.
