¿Dónde está la “luz” en su época de luz?

We wrap up our three-part blog series on the Virtual NYRR Season of Light 5K with one last prompt: Where is the light in your life, as you celebrate the Season of Light?

As many of the holidays this season incorporate light into their traditions, we're getting a more literal with this post and talking about actual, physical lights. Let's take a look at how we're bringing light into our homes, to our communities, and even to ourselves (and if that last one seems a little far-fetched, read on—you'll see what I mean).

The theme for this race—the Season of Light—came from the idea of including a wider range of holidays in our end-of-year celebrations, evolving from what was the Jingle Bell Jog. Although the virtual race did not begin until December 7 and lasted one week, the "season" itself lasted well over a month.

The season began with Diwali in November, a five-day festival of light for Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs. As we write this post, we are in the middle of Hanukkah, the eight-day Jewish festival of lights, where each night, families and communities light candles on the menorah. From there, we have the Christian tradition of Christmas on December 25, where light comes in the form of decorating trees with lights and ornaments. And as we approach the new year, Kwanzaa brings people together to light the seven candles on the kinara, symbolizing the Seven Principles of Kwanzaa.

So this week, we're asking you, our runners and our readers: Where are the lights in your life? After the "dark" year that was 2020, how did you bring light into your area, whether it was taking part in a holiday tradition, decorating your home with lights, or even, as I attempted, putting on a light-up running vest and going out for a run:

It's both festive and safety-conscious! The sun sets at about 3 p.m. these days, so be sure to make yourself visible out there.

But enough from me—let's hear it from you. How have you been celebrating during the Season of Light?

Did you get your running partners together (at a safe social distance) for any of the holidays? Are you particularly proud of how you've decorated your apartment / house / own self? Or did you see any particularly cool light displays on one of your recent runs?

Take a photo, share it on Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag #SeasonofLight5K, and we'll share some of your responses here!

Ted is excited that he got to decorate *two* trees this year, but he will also be celebrating Festivus on December 23.
