Llegó el invierno: cómo prepararse para la United Airlines NYC Half

For those runners who have signed up for the 2019 United Airlines NYC Half, race day is fast approaching and it’s time to start training. Preparing for a spring race during the winter can be a challenge, which is why we are here to help you get into race shape.

Get Ready for Winter Running

Some runners struggle to stay motivated in the winter. “It is too cold” is a common complaint at this time, but during this #ResolveToRun season, it’s a great time to kick-start a new healthy you.

And with the United Airlines NYC Half right around the corner, there is no better time to get out and #ResolveToRun. To help stay safe and fit this training season—no matter the conditions—we have a few tips!

  1. Dress in layers. During winter, the right gear is key. Wear multiple layers, made of moisture-wicking fabric, and make use of hats and gloves. (Check out the official NYRR Run for Life collection by New Balance).

  2. As soon as your run is finished, change into warm, dry clothes.

  3. If weather conditions are unsafe, do a bodyweight circuit, yoga, or other non-running indoor exercise activity.

  4. Drink plenty of water—even when you are cold and don’t feel like it.

  5. Run with a friend for accountability and safety.

  6. Hit the stairs! Stair workouts are a staple of indoor training for track and field for a reason. They are great for building leg and glute strength.

  7. If it really is too cold to go outside and you just want to stay in and watch TV, stay active and do squats, lunges, wall sits, and other exercises during commercial breaks.
