Una carrera rápida de 10K en Queens

As the third event in the 2019 NYRR Five-Borough Series, the NYRR Queens 10K brought more than 11,000 runners to Flushing Meadows–Corona Park for 6.2 miles in the borough's largest park. With the start of summer less than a week away, clear skies and cool temperatures on race morning made for a bright and sunny transition into the next season of racing.

The celebration of New York City's most diverse borough didn't start on race morning, though. On Tuesday, a group of NYRR Striders at the Young Israel of Wavecrest & Bayswater Senior Center received pairs of New Balance shoes to keep them moving well into summer.

Then on Friday of this week, NYRR staff and members of NYRR Team for Kids visited PS 164Q in Flushing—located just a block or two from Flushing Meadows Corona Park—for a New Balance shoe distribution through NYRR and New Balance's 1 for You 1 for Youth initiative.

On Saturday, some those very same young athletes joined in the excitement of race day, as the Rising New York Road Runners at the NYRR Queens 10K welcomed more than 350 students for fitness activities and short dash races around the Fountain of the Planets.

While the NYRR Queens 10K served as the next event in the NYRR Five-Borough Series, helping runners take that next step toward guaranteed entry to the 2020 United Airlines NYC Half, it also marked the next competition in the NYRR Club Points season.

Leading the way in the men's and women's races were runners from two of the city's top teams, as Tariku Demelash Abera of the West Side Runners broke the tape in the men's race in 29:49, and Roberta Groner of the New York Athletic Club took the women's title in 33:33. The West Side Runners took the top team spots in both the men's and the women's divisions.

Rounding out the 2019 NYRR Five-Borough Series will be the New Balance Bronx 10 Mile on September 29, followed by the NYRR Staten Island Half on October 13. And if you'd like to see more of Flushing Meadows Corona Park throughout the year, NYRR Open Run offers a free 5K run there every Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
