Los lugares del mundo favoritos para correr del equipo de NYRR

Global Running Day is coming up—it's on Wednesday, June 5, to be exact—and New York Road Runners will have a host of offerings throughout the day here in New York City. From the NYRR 1 for You 1 for Youth 5K in Central Park, to the Rising New York Road Runners Global Running Day Field Day at Icahn Stadium and group events at the NYRR RUNCENTER featuring the New Balance Run Hub, to a total of five NYRR Open Run events setting off simultaneously in the evening.

For runners outside of the five boroughs, you can stay connected with NYRR by taking part in the NYRR Virtual Global Running Day 1M, a free one-mile virtual race that you can run anywhere in the world, any time between June 1 and June 9—but what better time to race it than on Global Running Day?

To get you excited for the international celebration of all things running, some of the NYRR staff have submitted their favorite places that they've run around the world. Here are a few selections:

Gordon Bakoulis, Editorial:
Santa Barbara, CA

For me, so much of the fun and excitement of traveling derives from finding beautiful places to run and meeting people to share those runs with. Last year I visited Santa Barbara, CA, for a wedding and was lucky to find gorgeous running and excellent companions with Santa Barbara Running and Racing. We enjoyed a six-miler along the beachfront starting before dawn and finishing in clear morning light. I loved the running, the views, the camaraderie, and the ocean breeze!

Gary McLaughlin, Digital:
San Francisco, CA

As a child in Ireland, I was fascinated with iconic American landmarks, one of which was the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

When I travel, I always bring my running shoes (New Balance, of course) and try to get some early-morning miles in. It’s a chance to see the city in a different light.

However, when I traveled to San Francisco, my first run was with friends and their preferred route took me away from the bridge. Undeterred, I set off the following morning and tackled the seemingly endless rolling hills of the city once again as I ran a route around Lands End Lookout.  Resplendent in green shades that reminded me of my Irish roots, Lands End was a gorgeous venue for a casual run. But nestled around the corner of a cliff was what I really came to see, the Golden Gate Bridge. As part of my tourist activities, I saw it again later in the trip, but that early-morning first glimpse made it one of those memorable runs that always stick with you.

Frances Alvarado, Social Media:
San Juan, Puerto Rico

I love running around the shoreline of San Juan, Puerto Rico (my hometown!). ☀🌊🏰 The best runs I’ve had were listening to the waves crash against the rocks, feeling the breeze and taking in spectacular views of the old El Morro fort, and THAT never gets old. At the end of my run, I usually sit and watch the children play with their kites, eat a piragua, and recharge from the workout. It feels like an instant vacation.

Katie Manzi, Digital:
Stirling, Scotland

In 2012, I studied abroad for a summer in Stirling, Scotland. The university was nestled on the outskirts of the city, right at the foot of the Ochill Hills that eventually become the Scottish Highlands. Several times over that summer, I would run to the top of the hill directly behind the university and back down. It was swampy, steep, windy, covered in sheep, and absolutely fabulous. I had so much fun running those hills, and I think about my time there often.

Ted Doyle, Digital:
Buenos Aires, Argentina

This past March, I went to Buenos Aires for a friend's wedding, and, as runners do, I looked around a map for any good running spots beforehand. Luckily, I noticed the Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve was about a mile from where we were staying. Just on the edge of the biggest city in the country, you've got this network of soft-surface trails—the longest one was about five miles—where on one side of the reserve, you have views of the Buenos Aires skyline, and on the other, you have views of the Río de la Plata.

I'm still not sure how I made it through an hour-long run in the middle of the day and then the wedding itself—which went until 6:00 a.m.—but the run made a great trip even better.

And remember: Wherever you find yourself on June 5, make sure to #GetOutToRun and celebrate Global Running Day. Make your pledge to run now at globalrunningday.org.
