12 millas más, 12 semanas más

A look at the calendar shows that Sunday, August 11 stands exactly 12 weeks from Sunday, November 3. On that first Sunday in November, more than 50,000 runners will race through the five boroughs in the TCS New York City Marathon. But for today, a crowd of more than 4,500 runners showed up to Central Park to prepare for those 26.2 miles at the TCS New York City Marathon Training Series 12M.

First to finish today's 12-miler was Tadesse Yae Dabi of the West Side Runners, breaking the tape in 1:12:07; the win was Dabi's third in a row at a New York Road Runners race, following victories at last week's NYRR Manhattan 7 Mile and the NYRR Team Championships (5M) a week earlier. Just behind him was Tom Ford (not to be confused with the fashion designer), while Alison Heslin led the way in the women's race in 1:20:39.

With today's run taking place three months before "the big day," runners could work out the kinks and practice their race-day strategies, sorting out what does and what does not work for them at a more manageable distance. Let's hear what two runners had to say about what they took away from today's run:

And if you're looking for a little more guidance as you prepare to take on the five boroughs, you're in luck! The 12-week TCS New York City Marathon Training Program starts tomorrow. Each plan is catered to your training background, and adapts with each week as you progress toward November 3. Before you know it, you'll be lining up on the Verrazzano fit, strong, and ready to take on the Big Apple.
