Two-time Olympian and Team New Balance athlete Kim Conley will run the race as part of preparations for her marathon debut at the 2016 TCS New York City Marathon in November

New York, Sept. 19, 2016 – The New Balance Bronx 10 Mile, 5K, and Youth Field Day, on Sunday, September 25, will feature more than 14,000 runners of all ages and abilities. The New Balance Bronx 10 Mile, the fourth race in NYRR’s Five Borough Series, will feature a new race finish near Macombs Dam Park and Yankee Stadium, and the second-annual New Balance Bronx 5K and first-ever Youth Field Day will round out the days’ events. While the New Balance Bronx 10 Mile has reached capacity with an expected 12,000 finishers, registration is still open for the New Balance Bronx 5K (near capacity), and Youth Field Day.

"Our events in the Bronx really touch home for me.  In addition to the borough being the original base of operation for New York Road Runners, I was also born and raised in the Bronx.  The course and post-finish festival are held in the very neighborhoods where I spent much of my time growing up,” said Peter Ciaccia, president of events for New York Road Runners and race director of the TCS New York City Marathon. “NYRR is committed to making a difference in the Bronx. Together with New Balance, we’ve enhanced the event and our community impact.  And with top athletes such as Team New Balance athlete and U.S. Olympian Kim Conley in the 10 Mile field this this year, the Bronx is making its mark on the running scene.”

Two-time Olympian Kim Conley will compete in the New Balance Bronx 10 Mile as part of preparations for her marathon debut on November 6, at the 2016 TCS New York City Marathon, where she is a part of a stacked American professional women’s field. Conley, a Team New Balance athlete, will help kick off New Balance’s first year as title sponsor of the New Balance Bronx 10 Mile. New Balance is also title sponsor of the New Balance 5th Avenue Mile, and is working together with NYRR on the opening of a new NYRR running center, set to open in late 2016 near Columbus Circle.

“We are excited to kick off our title sponsorship this year at the New Balance Bronx 10 Mile as we continue to build our year-round partnership with NYRR and their dedicated community of runners,” said Rob DeMartini, president and CEO of New Balance. “This year we are happy to bring Team New Balance athlete Kim Conley to run the historical streets in the Bronx and introduce the Finishers Photo Pavilion to enhance the race experience. In addition, we look forward to welcoming runners at our Flatiron store for packet pick-up and showcase the latest in New Balance fall gear.”

As part of the day’s events, the second annual New Balance 5K will take off at 7:30 a.m. with 2,500 runners, just ahead of the 10-mile race at 8:00 a.m. with a field of 12,000 runners. The first-ever Youth Field Day—consisting of fun, free activities such as long jump, bean-bag relays, and hurdles for participants ages 4-18—will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Macombs Dam Park.

“We currently provide free, year-round running programs in schools and community centers throughout the Bronx, and are excited to add a new Youth Field Day this Sunday alongside the New Balance Bronx 10 Mile and 5K that will give kids the opportunity to join in the race-day fun," said Michael Capiraso, CEO and president of New York Road Runners.

NYRR is committed to spreading its mission, to help and inspire people through running, to the exciting and vibrant neighborhoods of the Bronx. The Bronx holds special significance and is part of NYRR’s storied history, as the organization was founded in the borough in 1958 by the legendary, long distance pioneer Ted Corbitt, right in Macombs Dam Park. Through free community programming and events, including free weekly NYRR Open Runs in St. Mary’s Park and Crotona Park, and free NYRR Striders walking sessions for seniors in Bronx parks and neighborhood centers, NYRR encourages community members of all ages and abilities to get moving towards a healthier way of life. NYRR is also proud to partner with the Office of Ruben Diaz, Jr., Bronx Borough President, and the #Not62 initiative to further increase health and wellness in Bronx communities.

“I could not think of a more perfect partnership on our ‘#Not62’ initiative than teaming up with the New York Road Runners,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. “We are always looking for partners to help improve health in our borough, and considering the success of the New York City Marathon as well as the New Balance Bronx 10 Mile event, joining with the New York Road Runners was a great fit. Good health is a lifestyle that entails changing negative habits, something that coincides with the New York Road Runners mission. I want to thank them for their efforts in helping promote these healthy habits and their continued support in helping improve our great borough.

In addition to the programs and events available to adult members of the community, NYRR has a significant presence in Bronx schools and community centers through the NYRR Mighty Milers and Young Runners youth running programs. During the 2015-16 school year, more than 16,000 students from more than 100 Bronx schools and community centers participated in NYRR youth running programs. Enrollment applications for NYRR Mighty Milers and Young Runners for the 2016-2017 school year are currently being accepted from schools and community centers across New York City. Coaches and teachers can email youthprograms.outreach@nyrr.org to learn more and apply.

Since its first running in 1995, the Bronx 10 Mile has been a festive gathering for runners, family and friends, and the local community. After runners boogie down through the vibrant New York City borough, they can celebrate with New Balance and local hip-hop legend DJ Kool Herc at the post-race festival, take part in fun, social photo opportunities, and preview the New Balance Borough Footwear Collection. The post-race festival will include local community partners, including #Not62 and the Bronx Borough President’s Office. Also on site will be the Bronx Lebanon Health Screening Mobile, and the Parks Fitness Mobile, offering activities for race participants and members of the community, courtesy of NYRR and the New York City Parks Department.
