NYRR Bronx 10-Mile to Feature 10,000 Runners and First-Ever NYRR Bronx 5K on Sunday, September

Comunicados de prensa

New York, September 21, 2015—The NYRR Bronx 10-Mile, the fourth race in NYRR’s signature Five-Borough Series, will feature a newly added race element on Sunday, September 27—the first-ever NYRR Bronx 5K. While the Bronx 10-Mile has reached capacity with an expected 10,000 finishers, registration is still open for the NYRR Bronx 5K, it was announced today by Peter Ciaccia, president of events for New York Road Runners and race director of the TCS New York City Marathon.

“We are thrilled to be able to expand the Bronx 10-Mile this year to include the newly added NYRR Bronx 5K, giving an additional 1,500 participants the opportunity to run, walk, and experience the culture and diversity that the Bronx has to offer,” said Ciaccia. “We want to inspire as many people as we can through running, and offering the new 5K element this year is a way to get additional family and friends together for a morning filled with fitness and activity.”

“As part of the NYRR Five-Borough Series, the Bronx 10-Mile is especially significant as we celebrate and run remembering the legendary Ted Corbitt, who founded NYRR in the Bronx borough back in 1958 and served as our first official president,” said Michael Capiraso, president and CEO of NYRR. “From the Bronx 10-Mile and new NYRR Bronx 5K, to our annual events and free community programming in the borough, we are grateful for the opportunity to bring runners of all abilities together for fun and inspiring running experiences.”

NYRR organizes and supports events and community programming in the Bronx throughout the year for people of all ages—from kids to seniors—designed to get them moving toward a healthier lifestyle, including the NYRR Henry Isola, Kurt Steiner, and Harry Murphy cross country races and accompanying Youth Running Series events at Van Cortlandt Park, neighborhood runs and walks, NYRR Mighty Milers and Young Runners youth running programs at Bronx schools and community centers, and more. NYRR is proud to partner with Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. and the #Not62 initiative to increase health and wellness in Bronx communities; both of this weekend’s events celebrate the year-round engagement and mutual commitment to an ongoing collaboration.

New to the Bronx this year is NYRR Open Run, a community-based initiative aimed at bringing free weekly runs to local neighborhoods in New York City by working with community leaders and volunteers. The first NYRR Open Run launched in St. Mary’s Park in the Bronx and takes place each Saturday at 9:00 a.m., including this Saturday, September 26. Additional details are available here on the NYRR Open Run webpage.

For the second consecutive year, the Bronx 10-Mile will bring back hip-hop legend DJ Kool Herc, who began his musical career in the Bronx. DJ Kool Herc will serve as the official DJ at the start and the finish area of the race, providing entertainment for the thousands of runners and hundreds of spectators coming together for the event.
