New York Road Runners Round-Up: May News and Events
NYRR will be hosting events for all ages and abilities this month, including the Airbnb Brooklyn Half, part of the NYRR Five-Borough Series. Many events are festive and fun for the whole family, with kids’ races, pre- and post-race entertainment, and more. On Sunday, May 10, celebrate traditional Japanese culture and Mother’s Day at the ninth annual Japan Run at Central Park. The four-mile race and accompanying kids’ race are a part of Japan Day @ Central Park, which starts immediately after the Japan Run and features a variety of Japanese food, activities, and stage performances over the course of the day. The Airbnb Brooklyn Half Pre-Party presented by New Balance, is a celebratory, free, three-day event that will take place at Pier 2, Brooklyn Bridge Park from May 13-15, inviting runners, family and friends, and the public to experience the energy and diversity of Brooklyn. The event will serve as much more than the main hub for race material pick-up, and will be filled with celebrations of fitness, hospitality, local food, and live musical performances. The 2015 Airbnb Brooklyn Half, part of the NYRR Five-Borough Series, is a 13.1-mile race celebration through New York City’s most flavorful borough, with an estimated 25,000 participants of all ages and abilities, including some of the area’s top local elite runners. Participants will run from the historic Brooklyn Museum down to the finish line on the iconic Coney Island boardwalk. Following the race, runners can join their friends and families and reward themselves with hot dogs, beer, carnival rides, music, and entertainment. For the first time ever, the NYRR Kids’ Boardwalk Run at the Airbnb Brooklyn Half, part of the NYRR Youth Running Series, will bring 1,000 high school, middle school, and elementary school students, including more than 700 kids from NYRR’s Mighty Milers and Young Runners youth running programs, to Coney Island for a one-mile out-and-back course along one of the most celebrated stretches of the boardwalk. The NYRR Youth Running Series will continue its spring road racing season at the UAE Healthy Kidney 10K with a 1.7-mile run around Central Park’s lower loop beginning and ending at 69th Street on Central Park’s East Drive.
