Madison de Rozario Australia

When Madison de Rozario won the TCS New York City Marathon in 2021, she became the first athlete since 2008 to win Paralympic marathon gold and New York in the same year. The five-time Paralympic medalist and 10-time world championships medalist has also won the London Marathon twice and the Commonwealth Games marathon twice.

In 2023, one week after finishing as runner-up at the Boston Marathon, de Rozario won her second London Marathon title in a course-record time of 1:38:51 in a sprint finish against Manuela Schär. De Rozario won the Paralympic marathon in 2021 in similar fashion, racing to the line one second faster than Schär in a photo finish to take her second gold at the Tokyo Games. In Tokyo, she also won gold in the 800 meters in a Paralympic record time, and bronze in the 1,500 meters.

She made her Paralympic debut at the Beijing 2008 Games as the youngest athlete on the Australian team, and in 2013 she reached the international podium for the first time with a bronze medal over 800 meters at the World Para Athletics Championships. She won her first individual Paralympic medal at the Rio 2016 Games, taking silver in the 800 meters, and also claimed silver in the 4x400-meter relay. In 2017, she won three medals at the World Para Athletics Championships, taking gold in the 5,000 meters, silver in the 800 meters, and bronze in the 1,500 meters. In 2018, de Rozario won both the 1,500 meters and the marathon in her Commonwealth Games debut, and six weeks later won her first London Marathon.

De Rozario has a background in graphic design and likes to produce digital sketches in her spare time. When she was 4 years old, she acquired transverse myelitis, a neurological condition that inflames the spinal cord, but it was another eight years before she got her first look into the world of Paralympic sport. She is coached by Australian wheelchair racing legend Louise Sauvage, and in 2020 was among several female athletes to be part of Barbie’s “Shero” series, having a personalized doll designed after her that was revealed on International Women’s Day.
