Jake Wightman was the 2018 New Balance 5th Avenue Mile champion in his third appearance in the event. He is one of the most dominant middle-distance runners in Great Britain and 2018 has been a breakthrough year for him. Wightman earned a bronze medal at the Berlin European Championships in the 1500 meters and clocked a new personal best in the 800 meters at the London Müller Grand Prix in 1:44.61. Wightman also smashed a 34-year-old Scottish record in the 1000 meters in the Stockholm Diamond League in 2:16.27.

Wightman competed in both the 800 meters and 1500 meters at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, placing third in the 1500 meters and fourth in the 800 meters. Both of his parents also competed at the Commonwealth Games – his mother, Susan Tooby, was sixth in the 10,000 meters at Edinburgh in 1986 and his father Geoff Wightman was eighth in the marathon at Auckland in 1990.

Based out of Teddington, Great Britain just outside of London he is coached by his father Geoff Wightman. His father is also a stadium announcer at athletic events in Great Britain. He has a twin brother, Sam, who doubles as the “Britbear” the mascot for British Athletics.
