Geoffrey Kamworor

Geoffrey Kamworor Kenia

Geoffrey Kamworor is looking to become only the third athlete to win three men’s open division titles at the TCS New York City Marathon. He claimed his first marathon victory in New York in 2017 when he held off compatriot Wilson Kipsang down the final stretch in Central Park. He won his second event title in 2019 and has made the podium in all four of his TCS New York City Marathon appearances.

On 27 de junio de 2020, Kamworor was hit by a motorcycle while out on a daily run; he had to have surgery for a tibial fracture that kept him off the roads for more than six months. He qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 but had to pull out of the competition due to an ankle injury. Kamworor bounced back on the world stage in better form than ever, finishing fifth at the World Athletics Championships Marathon in 2022 before clocking a personal-best 2:04:23 to finish as runner-up at the London Marathon in 2023.

Kamworor has won three World Athletics Cross Country Championships and finished fourth in the event last year. He is also a three-time half marathon world champion and held the half-marathon world record before it was broken by Kibiwott Kandie in 2020. He represented Kenya in the 10,000 meters at the Rio 2016 Olympics. Between 2012 and 2014, Kamworor recorded three consecutive sub-2:07 performances at the Berlin Marathon, placing third there twice and fourth once. Earlier in his career, he served as a pacemaker for Haile Gebrselassie and Patrick Makau in their worldrecord runs at the Berlin Marathon.

Kamworor entrena en Kenia, donde solía correr 5 kilómetros todos los días para ir y volver de la escuela. He was a hardworking student with aspirations of one day becoming a lawyer, and he was accepted to a college in the U.S. to study law, but instead decided to focus his career 100 percent on athletics. He is coached by Patrick Sang and trains every day with marathon world-record holder and Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge.
