Galen Rupp USA

Galen Rupp is one of the greatest American men’s distance runners of all-time with two Olympic medals and three Abbott World Marathon Majors podium appearances to his name. He has competed at every Olympics since 2008, winning silver in the 10,000 meters at the London 2012 Games and bronze in the marathon at the Rio 2016 Games. He finished eighth in the Tokyo Olympic marathon after winning the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. He is also a five-time U.S. champion in the 10,000 meters and has represented Team USA at six outdoor and three indoor World Championships. He was the top American finisher in the men’s marathon at last year’s World Athletics Championships in his home state of Oregon.

In 2017, six months after finishing as the runner up at the Boston Marathon, Rupp became the first American man in 15 years to win the Chicago Marathon and first American-born man to win the race in 35 years with a time of 2:09:20. The following year, he set personal bests in both the half (59:47) and the marathon (2:06:07), falling only four seconds short of Ryan Hall’s American record in the half marathon and winning the Prague Marathon. Rupp nearly matched his marathon personal best in 2021 when he placed second in the Chicago Marathon in 2:06:35. Rupp is also the former American-record holder in the outdoor 10,000 meters (26:44:36), indoor 5,000 meters (13:01.26), and indoor 3,000 meters (7:30.16). He currently still holds the indoor two mile (8:07.41) record. His first appearance at a New York Road Runners race came in 2011 at the NYC Half; he took third place in 1:00:30, just six seconds behind winner Mo Farah and five seconds behind runner-up Gebre Gebremarian.

Originally a soccer player, Rupp was recruited to compete in track and cross-country in high school, going on to win three Oregon state titles on the track and two in cross-country. He then competed for the University of Oregon, where he became a 14-time All American, won five individual championships, and became the first person ever to win six NCAA distance races in the same calendar year. Rupp and his wife, Keara, have four children together, including twins who were born in 2014.
