Gabriel Geay is the Tanzanian record holder in the marathon and will be lining up for his second NYC race at the 2024 United Airlines NYC Half after competing in the UAE Healthy Kidney 10K in 2019
He grew up as a middle-distance and cross-country runner near Arusha in Tanzania, and then moved up to the marathon distance in 2021, breaking a national record (2:04:55) in his marathon debut in Milan. That performance qualified him for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Geay went on to finish seventh at the 2022 World Athletics Championships marathon and then set a national record (2:03:00) at the 2022 Valenica Marathon, which currently stands as the ninth-fastest of all time. He was then runner-up at the 2023 Boston Marathon, four spots ahead of Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge.
