Marathon + Half-Marathon

April 26, 2009

In response to unseasonably warm race-day conditions, race officials made the prudent decision this year to cancel the marathon (26.2 miles) and conduct the half-marathon (13.1 miles) as an unscored, noncompetitive event in which slower walkers were encouraged to exit the course after seven miles. With an estimated 7,700 runners and walkers taking part on brilliantly sunny morning in Central Park, the event continued its tradition of celebrating the health and fitness of women of all ages.
Pre-Race Events

The two-day pre-race expo featured talks and book-signings by best-selling health and fitness author Dr. Pam Peeke (center)…

…and celebrity chef Rocco DeSpirito, who got up-close-and-personal while signing books.

Saturday evening’s pasta party at Tavern on the Green provided healthy carbs for Sunday morning.

The pasta party has become so popular that it sold out weeks in advance.

Event Day

Race day dawned brilliantly sunny and hot, and the thousands of runners and walkers were instructed to put their health first and scale back their pace to avoid heat-related problems. The five invited athletes went out at a quick but controlled pace. From left to right in the first photo, the top runners were Magdalena Lewy Boulet, 35, or Oakland, CA; Susan Loken, 45, of Phoenix, AZ; Susie Meyers-Kennedy, 43, of Chandler, AZ; Christine Glockenmeier, 41, of Basking Ridge, NJ; and Katarina Janosikova, 28, of Astoria, NY.

Central Park was sunny and warm as thousands of women moved off the starting line.

Lewy Boulet crossed the finish line in just over 1 hour and 18 minutes; Janosikova placed second.

Third place was shared by Meyers-Kennedy, Loken, and Glockenmeier; all are over age 40.

The top finishers join celebrity Carol Alt (far left), Fitness magazine editor-in-chief Betty Wong (second from right) and More magazine editor-in-chief Lesley Jane Seymour (far right).
