NYRR Al Gordon Snowflake 5K

Close to 4,000 runners braved chilly conditions in Prospect Park a fast 5K at the NYRR Al Gordon Snowflake on Saturday, February 21. The top male broke the tape in 15:18; the top female finished in 18:29. The Brooklyn location provided a welcome change of pace.

Kristen Kopczynski, RNYC, limbered up before her 23:58 effort.


Prospect Park’s expansive lush lawns provided ample stretching space.


Warming up for the race was an all-inclusive team effort.


The race honors Al Gordon, the 107-year-old NYRR board member whose image appeared on the finisher’s shirt.


The front start corral was filled with competitive men.


A lone CPTC woman blended in with the wall of men lunging across the start mat.


Although the temperature was 28 degrees, one brave runner donned shorts.


Cheerful spectators supported their beloved runners with posters and big smiles.


Antonio Reyes of Brooklyn showed his enthusiasm for running on his home turf.


Kate Pasicznyk (right) of Brooklyn ended up securing a two-minute win over Alyse Pesocaro of Manhattan.


Orin Fraser of Manhattan was serious about staying hydrated—he carried his own Gatorade.


Al Gordon’s grandson, John Roberts, CPTC (left), beat WSX’s Elmustafa McHkirate by one second.


Luis Porto, RRFT, took top honors in his 12-14 age group with his 18:16 effort.


Craig Bruck gave a thumbs-up to competing for Team Leukemia.


Olympian John Henwood of New Zealand and NYAC broke the tape in 5:18.


Margaret Butler of Manhattan was the first female finisher in 18:29.


It was fun for the whole family in Prospect Park, which borders several booming Brooklyn neighborhoods.

Noshing on bagels and recovering with friends was a great way to start a Saturday.


Runners from the Bronx Flash, a youth running group supported by the NYRR Foundation, happily participated.
