For many runners on the frigid morning of December 14, staying warm was as much of a challenge as running four miles quickly. NYRR president and CEO Mary Wittenberg urged everyone to give a hug of appreciation to the staff and volunteers who’d arrived as early as 4:30 a.m. to set up. Still, the atmosphere was festive—even at times goofy—in keeping with the holiday theme, and at the end of the morning nearly 4,800 people had crossed the finish line.

Hundreds of NYRR Foundation kids ran, including 14-year-old Ivette Benitez (#486) and her Rabbits teammates.


Shaun Baldwin and Lisa Baldwin came down from Elmsford, NY, to run.


Runners of all ages did what they could to keep muscles limber in the cold.


A few brave souls bared arms and legs, but for most it was a tights-and-long-sleeves day.


Ho, ho, ho, we don’t call this race the Holiday 4-Mile for nothing.


Kaitlin Morley (#273) edged Hector Sevilla (#363), 27:42 to 27:43.


There’s more than one way to keep your ears warm on a 27-degree December morning.


Ryan Drefus finished in 30:15 while doing his best Santa impersonation.


Many finishers chose to bundle up—never mind that it probably cost them a few seconds per mile.


This runner must have gotten the message that the body loses 50 percent of its heat through the head.


All that this runner needed was a red nose to complete the Rudolph look.


Michelle Castro of Jersey City, NJ, smiled all the way to her 51:25 finish.


It felt great to log four brisk miles while most of Manhattan was still sleeping.


The women’s winner, Erin Flynn of the New York Athletic Club, clocked a speedy 23:36.


The men’s winner was Dustin Emrani, who broke the 20-minute barrier with his 19:54.
