Champion Chip
The ChampionChip® timing system utilizes special mats placed on the course and chips affixed to each participant's shoe. Each entrant in a chip-timed race must wear a ChampionChip in order to be timed. The chip contains a transponder that is activated when it moves into the magnetic field emitted by antennae in the mats. Therefore, the chip needs to be close to the ground to be read.
Each chip has a unique seven-digit code. If you own a chip, be sure to indicate your chip's number on your race application. Otherwise, NYRR will provide a chip for your use during the race. Wear only the one chip assigned to you for each race. Wearing multiple chips could lead to scoring errors or disqualification.

Attaching a Chip to Your Shoe
To attach the chip to your shoe, insert the small end of the plastic tie through the slot on one side of the
chip. Then thread it under your shoelaces and up through the slot on the other side of the chip. Fasten the tie
by feeding the small end through the connector and tightening. To remove the chip, clip the tie. Returning the Chip
Chips provided by NYRR remain New York Road Runners property and must be returned or paid for after the race, even if you are unable to participate or do not finish the race. Chips will be collected after the finish of the race. Chips may also be returned by mail or in person using the chip jar in the NYRR lobby. If mailing the chip, wrap it in padding to avoid damage and be sure to specify your return address; you will be charged for a chip that is lost or damaged in the mail.Mailing address for chip returns:

If we have not received your chip within 20 days after the race, you will be charged $35. If you paid for the race using a credit card, your card will be charged automatically. Others will be invoiced.
