Charles Moran's Journal
Introductory Entry (Posted January 20, 2009)
Having just completed my first fall season at ZAP Fitness, I have to say that I'm confident that I made the right choice in going there. This fall our main focus was on building a strong base for the spring outdoor season. Unlike college, I spent the fall doing primarily just volume. The workouts that we did were focused more on aerobic strength, consisting of sustained up-hill tempos and long intervals with short rest. Although the focus of the fall is just building a base, we did race several times. I was able to progress well through the season and had a good breakthrough at the Manchester Road Race in November, finishing 12th in a very deep elite field. Unfortunately, I injured my hip during the race and had to miss a couple weeks, and the last race of the season.
In recent weeks I started training again at full speed. I was just in Florida for a week and had a great week of training. I'm currently at home in northern Virginia and so it was a nice change to get down to the warm weather. I really felt like I could open up on the workouts. Now that workouts are going well again I'm starting to get the itch to race. Fortunately I will not have to wait that long, with and indoor 3K/5K on the schedule, followed by US Cross a few weeks later. I'm excited to see what the spring brings for both me and my teammates. We have a very tight group that works out very well together; I think we will be able to elevate each other to new levels.
