To foster healthy competition among New York area clubs, encourage excellence in running, and help boost race participation and spectator interest, 11 annual NYRR scored races of varying distances are designated as Club Points races.
Clubs can score points at Club Points races in 14 different divisions: men's and women's open (all ages, grouped into A, B, and C sub-divisions), as well as men's and women's age-group divisions for 40+, 50+, 60+, and 70+. Runners may score in more than one division for their team. For example, a 50-year-old finisher could score in the open, 40+, and 50+ divisions.
Open A and B include the top and middle 14 men's and women's teams. Open C consists of all remaining teams. At the end of the year, the top 2 performers in Open B and Open C will move up a division, while the bottom 2 performers in Open A and Open B will move down a division.
At each event, a team's place is determined by the combined time of a team's fastest 5 or 3 runners (depending on the division & race distance). The lower the combined time, the higher the place. Teams can field any number of runners in a race, but only the first 5 or 3 finishers score in each division. In the open divisions, for races under 25km, a team will consist of the top 5 runners; for races 25km & longer, a team will consist of the top 3 runners. For all other divisions, a team will consist of the top 3 runners.
Each team is awarded points in their division based on place. If a team does not have enough finishers to qualify, no points are awarded. The following point structure is used for all divisions:
Each team accumulates points in their division over the course of the 11 annual Club Points races. At the end of the series, the two lowest scores are automatically dropped (if a race is cancelled, that event will be considered one of the dropped events). Each club with the most points is the winner of their division and top teams are honored at NYRR's annual Club Night.
At the annual NYRR Team Championships, usually held in August, only members of established and NYRR-recognized teams may enter this race and receive credit for it. However, you do not need to be a NYRR member to enter. In addition, entrants must have completed at least one NYRR scored/qualifying race between July 31, 2017, and August 4, 2018, for the team for which they will be scoring. Furthermore, they may not have competed for that team until at least 90 days after having competed for another team.
If a participating team has not fielded a full team in their division (men's and women's open, 40+, 50+, 60+, 70+) at a prior NYRR team-points race since January 1, 2017, the team may not score in that division at the NYRR Team Championships.
At the NYRR Team Championships, for open division teams (A, B & C) a team will consist of the top 10 runners. Men's 40+ teams will consist of the top 5 runners. Women's 40+ teams and all other divisions will consist of the top 3 runners. In addition, points in each division are doubled at this special event.
